Summary

Nada Klaić: Medieval Bosnia

Political position of Bosnian rulers until Tvrtko's coronation (1377)

reprint from 1989 with an index of names.

This posthumously published text is the only work by Nada Klaić (1920-1988) devoted entirely to medieval Bosnia and Hum. The book was first printed in 1989 by the Graphic Institute of Croatia, and in 1994 its unchanged second edition was published. Due to the topicality of the topic and the author's original interpretation of the history of the medieval Bosnian state and its relations with neighboring countries, there is still a lively public interest in this book, which justifies its third edition. Although it basically follows chronology, the content of Medieval Bosnia is not conceived like a traditionally structured historiographical synthesis, but is divided into five problematic chapters in which the author discusses the relevant interpretations of the historiographical literature of that time and debates with the opinions of individual historians. The focus of her research is the period from the beginning of political organization in Bosnia at the dawn of the 12th century to Tvrtko's coronation in 1377. The main questions relate to the conditions and course of the formation of the medieval Bosnian state or, as the book emphasizes, to the beginnings of political organization in Bosnia and to the relations of the Bosnian state and its rulers to the Hungarian crown. and death, this time some professional and editorial interventions should have been undertaken to make the content of the book more transparent and easier to use. In doing so, we primarily mean the standardization of terminology and the onomastic system, that is, the more precise identification of individual magnates and rulers, especially those with the same names to which no numbers have been added in the original. Also, the work would be enriched in a scientific sense by standardizing and completing the notes along with the text and creating a complete list of used sources and literature. However, these procedures would require additional time and resources, so they were not done this time either. We have only decided to create a more detailed index of names that also includes cited authors. In this way, we alleviated to some extent the lack of a list of sources and literature, and we enabled readers to resolve possible doubts about the identity of certain persons (especially nobles and rulers) as well as to find them more easily in the text.
