Branković Marija

Summary

Marija Branković: Psychology of the relationship between humans and (other) animals

What distinguishes humans from animals? How much do we even know about these differences? How do people approach animal nature?

The author opens her research with the problem of the relationship between people and animals, asking why people often ignore the ability of animals to think and feel. She points to some of the potential reasons for this attitude - the desire to justify the exploitation of animals, the fear of facing one's own fear of death, ideological and religious motives - in order to conduct research and determine which of these factors has the greatest influence on the attitudes of the respondents. When are people ready to sacrifice themselves for animals? To what extent do people perceive their pets differently from food animals? What do people know about the real mental and emotional capacities of animals?

Our relationship with animals affects the entire environment; the meat industry is one of the biggest polluters, and research is increasingly showing that meat consumption has negative health consequences. The obvious connection between the safety of the consumption of animal food and the well-being of domestic animals is an important topic even for those who do not support vegetarianism, and it warns us of cause-and-effect relationships in the system for which we are all bearers of responsibility.
