Summary

Reza Aslan: God is the history of man

The author Reza Aslan believes that the entire history of humanity can be told through the history of religions, which he treats quite equally, as special aspects of one and the same faith in God. He is skeptical of religions, which he sees only as various "languages" composed of symbols and metaphors, but these languages all speak of the same thing, expressing in different ways one and the same faith. The author is encouraged to take such an approach by his feeling that humanism and pantheism are key elements in the understanding of the history of religions, as well as history as a whole. In the book, he traces the development of religiosity, from primitive animism to today's monotheism. He especially carefully studies and explains to the reader the roots of the religious impulse, placing it in his theory of evolution. When the first people - hunters and gatherers - tried to explain the world to themselves, they recognized God in objects and phenomena that they directly observed around them, in animals, natural phenomena, giving them human characteristics, but also attributing human behaviors to them. They were convinced that these phenomena and the beings around them all have a soul, and that is the beginning of faith. As human civilization developed, so did the nature of what was believed in, and thus the ancient gods were created, who were presented as people with special powers, and eventually monotheism was developed, which was first accepted by the Jews.
The book was on the best-seller list in the USA, but it also caused numerous controversies and discussions, so the author himself was accused of being an infidel.

Reza Aslan (1972), American historian, professor of religious sciences of Iranian origin, is a member of the American Academy of Religions, the Society of Biblical Literature and the International Society for the Study of the Koran, and in addition teaches creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. He is the author of several books on religious issues, the most famous of which are "There is no God but God - the roots, evolution and future of Islam" and "Zealot - the life and age of Jesus of Nazareth".
