Summary

Hrvoje Kekez, Josipa Alviž, Luka Šešo, Zoran Turza: Catholic Church in Croatia

About Many books have been written about the Catholic Church in Croatia. In them, the Church was seen as a religious institution whose main purpose is the spread of spiritual teachings. This edition goes one step further and provides a comprehensive overview of the Church in Croatia once and today... And from various perspectives because it looks at it through the eyes of theologians, historians, art historians and ethnologists.

The Catholic Church in Croatia is a living fabric that has taken deep roots in many Croatian homes, many centuries ago. The result is numerous artistic achievements - from magnificent cathedrals and parish churches to wonderful examples of sacred painting and sculpture. And then there are the centuries-old customs associated with our religious holidays, which believers practice every year and do not allow to be forgotten.

In the history of the Catholic Church in Croatia, there were many prominent church dignitaries. In this book, emphasis is placed on persons who have been declared saints and blessed. They were joined by three prelates - bishops Juraj Dobrila and Josip Juraj Strossmayer and archbishop and cardinal Franjo Kuharić - who, each in their own time, were torchbearers of the Croatian regiment in difficult times.

A special chapter in the book is dedicated to Croatian religious sanctuaries. There are many of them in our homeland and thousands of believers visit them every year and pray and seek the intercession of the saints. Examples of all-night pilgrimages, especially to Marian shrines, where entire families find peace and comfort are not uncommon.

Theologian Zoran Turza, historian Hrvoje Kekez and ethnologist Luka Šešo (all employees of the Croatian Catholic University in Zagreb) and art historian Josip Alviž (employee of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb) participated in the preparation of this book. The book is equipped with photographs by recognized photographers and images from leading Croatian museum and archival institutions. That is why it will be even more interesting for everyone who wants to get to know the Church in Croatia in a comprehensive way.
