Summary
Petar Bezina: Manuscript heritage of the Franciscans of the Province of the Holy Redeemer
The author, Dr. Petar Bezina, in the book Manuscript heritage of the Franciscans of the Province of the Holy Redeemer gives a general overview of all monastery archives and provides a detailed list of manuscripts of the Province of the Holy Redeemer. When writing this book, Dr. Bezin relied on the works of his colleagues (such as the inventories of monastery archives, especially those of Fr. Josip Ante Soldo), but he himself examined these archives and manuscripts. Although this book provides a comprehensive overview of the entire manuscript heritage of the Franciscan Province, the focus is on the list of manuscripts. The author describes the archive in summary and refers to earlier inventories. dr. Bezina didn't just make overview lists, but, as he points out in the Preface, "when browsing, I sorted them by content, and on some of them I marked the signature with a pencil". His concern for the protection of the entire manuscript heritage of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Redeemer is primarily based on the awareness of the role of the Franciscans in the Croatian nation. They "along with spiritual work raised the oppressed people from backwardness, teaching them basic literacy, giving them advice on cultivating the fields and breeding plants and providing them with material assistance". The written record preserved in the monastery archives and libraries is the best testimony of their activity. He especially emphasizes the importance of archives, so in the Introduction he emphasizes the need for their protection. This book has no pretensions to expertly handle all the manuscript heritage of the Province of the Holy Redeemer. The author wanted to "warn even those who do not know about them (manuscripts), and thus perhaps stimulate the will to work" on their further study.
