The end of the city is constantly being announced; that scenario is heralded by the prophets of doom, but the prophets of new urbanism bring good news: hallelujah to the networked city. From a distance, the rumble of the demographic explosion, the wave of migration from the collapsing societies of the South and the East, and ecological catastrophes are already coming. Meanwhile, life just goes on. Behind our backs and without our knowledge, the city as we knew it is disappearing, and a new kind of city and a new kind of urbanity are emerging. Lieven De Cauter is a Flemish philosopher and historian from the University of Leuven. Exploring primarily the relationship between modern art, architecture and urbanism, De Cauter seeks ways to transform theoretical pessimism into optimistic activism and resistance to capitalism, for which there seems to be no alternative. He is one of the initiators and co-founders of the international tribunal to condemn the war in Iraq, called the "Brussels Tribunal", established in 2004, and the initiator of numerous protest actions.
