In 1934, Eva, a member of the "Republican Schutzbund" organization, sends her sons Slavko and Karl out of the country to protect them from the National Socialists. The "Schutzbund children" spend their holidays in Crimea and then live in a luxury home in Moscow - until Hitler breaks the pact with Stalin. Slavko is lost, and Karl is arrested; he ends up in a correctional home for children and youth, and finally, as an "enemy of the people", and in a labor camp. In the gulag, he met his future wife Nina - the author's mother. Karl wants to return to Vienna as soon as the situation allows, thus forcing his wife to go abroad...
