Summary
Aleksa Milanović: Representations of Transgender Identities
By questioning and reinterpreting binary gender categories within a specific cultural context, the discursively set and established boundaries concerning the mentioned categories, which define the subject and oblige him to fit into imagined and default models of sexuality and gender, can be called into question. By internalizing norms, the subject adopts social constructs as "naturally" given, which enables the survival of the constructs as the only valid possibilities. On the other hand, the appearance of transgenderism, i.e. the range of Other / different genders and gender identities, indicates the fragility of boundaries and offers the possibility of their reinterpretation and rethinking.
The book Representation of transgender identities in visual arts points to the transgender body as a place of potential for the transgression of binary structured gender and sexuality, as well as to the mechanisms of institutional imposition of binary norms as the only correct / normal / healthy. The representation of transgender identities in the visual arts, examples of which are analyzed and interpreted in this book, and whose goal is to present these identities as equal subjects, is one of the forms of intervention that enables subversive action, deconstruction and questioning of the given standards and norms within the dominant heteropatriarchal discourse.
