Matsumoto Taiyo

Summary

Taiyo Matsumoto: Sani 1

Sani has not been in driving condition for a long time and like any wreck lies motionless and decays under the influence of time and atmospheric conditions. This Nissan car factory model for the "Star Children" orphanage is the only glimmer of hope. When they enter it and sit on the seats, Sani suddenly comes to life. Then Haruo drives him through the desert imagining that he is a dangerous gunslinger or that he is cruising the endless universe with Shosuke. Sei drives through the familiar streets that lead to the house...

Sani is their escape from reality, a refuge for imagination, a kind of consolation from trauma: the main place where they share their most hidden secrets.

Realistically depicting the life inside the orphanage, the relationships between the abandoned children, their dreams, hopes, wishes, fears, Taijo Matsumoto shows the strong connection that exists between them that they are not aware of, illuminates the feelings of each child and awakens in us sincere compassion and the desire to help each of these little heroes hug tightly.

From the first volume alone, one can conclude that "Sunny" is a lot. In parallel, the microcosm (as a story about the world inside the orphanage) and the nanocosm ("Nissan Sani", a car in the yard of the orphanage, serves as a paddle for the escapism of children and young people, i.e. a portal to other worlds and a world unto itself). And at the same time, it is a vehicle - figuratively as much as literally - that carries the story with us as companions. Matsumoto is a master of his craft, both as a storyteller and as an illustrator - and the most beautiful thing is the fact that this volume is just the beginning of the great epic epic of (not so) little people.
