Summary

Linos Politis: History of Modern Greek Literature

"History of Modern Greek Literature" by Linos Politis is the most reference review of modern Greek literature written in Greek, a work that has seen more than 20 editions in Greece and is the first stop for all those who want to get to know this literature and the culture in which it was created. Politis provides a historical overview of Modern Greek literature starting from the Byzantine period (in which the clearer contours of what we know today as the Modern Greek language can be recognized) until the end of the 20th century, with an extensive introduction on the development of the Greek language. The first part presents artistic creativity from the beginnings to the 18th century: literature before the fall of Constantinople (XI–XV centuries) and after the fall of Constantinople (XV–XVII centuries), especially in Crete and Cyprus, as well as the work of scholars from the diaspora. Special chapters are dedicated to the literary flourishing of Crete in the 17th century and folk songs. In the second part, literature is analyzed during the decade before the Greek revolution of 1821. One chapter is dedicated to Solomos and one to Kalvos and the Ionian school. Next come the romantics from the Old Athenian school, the "generation of the eighties", with Kostis Palamas as the central figure, prose after 1880 (Georgios Viziinos, Aleksandar Papadijamandis and others), the "language question" and Janis Psiharis, poetry around Palamas and after him, Konstantin Cavafys, Angelos Sikeljanos, Nikos Kazantsakis and the "generation of the thirties" (Jorgos Seferis, Janis Ricos, Odysseus Elite and others). Post-war poetry and prose are interpreted in the last chapter. Two Greek writers will be crowned in the second half of the 20th century with the Nobel Prize - Seferis and Elitis - who won the prize for their poetry, which, as the reader of this work will immediately notice, occupies a strikingly important place in Greek literary culture. Contemporary sensibilities, on the other hand, will very quickly notice the striking absence of women in modern Greek literature, in which they are rarely present before the end of the 20th century.
