Lomonosov Mihail

Summary

Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov: Selected Writings

M.V. Lomonosov was the first Russian who, due to the multitude, diversity and originality of his scientific works in physics, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, etc., could rightfully stand side by side with his contemporary European scientists. First-class scientists of the 18th century, such as Euler, Wolf and others, appreciated Lomonosov's talent and work. To us, contemporary Russian scientists find in his works extraordinary scientific thoughts that Lomonosov was ahead of his time. But Lomonosov, precisely because of the conditions of his time, could not fully surrender to science and was above all a first-rate popularizer of natural sciences. The main merit of Lomonosov consists in processing the Russian literary language; in this sense, he was the "father of new Russian literature". In addition to the prosaic language for scientific works and ceremonial speeches, Lomonosov also created a poetic language, above all in his odes. Also, he gave the theory of language and literature in the first Russian grammar and rhetoric. For almost a century, this theory ruled in Russian literature, and more serious changes in the Russian literary language occurred only with Pushkin, who rejected the "uniform and limiting forms of the half-Slavic, half-Latin" prose construction of Lomonosov (Incidental Thoughts, 1834)
