Slika i vrijeme - Vatroslav Kuliš

Zidić Igor

Summary

Igor Zidić: Slika i vrijeme - Vatroslav Kuliš

After the publication of the books about Trebotić and the Mediterranean cultural circle, Murtić and cosmopolitanism, Vaniština and avant-gardeism, the fourth volume was published about Kuliš's eruptive colorism, vitalism that springs from the fascination of the sea or the ferocity of rock music, but also the inevitable synergy of artistic and literary language, so close to both the author and this painter. That's why with the help of this book we can learn a lot and find out a lot of new things. Both about the image and the time in which it was created, without neglecting the origins and inherited tradition. Because, writes Igor Zidić, Kuliš's expression "inherits part of its vitality from instinctively chosen (complementary) artistic parents. It is, on the one hand, the paternal (energetic) component of the virile and robust Edo Murtić, and on the other hand, the maternal (spiritual and emotional) trait of the sensitive and nervous Ivo Dulčić". But also inheriting, not by chance, the light and freedom from the works of, for example, Antun Šoljan and Albert Camus. The author himself wonders how the painter, who was born in the Herzegovina landscape and grew up in Dubrava, Zagreb, got such an obsession with the sea, such a permanent and deep connection with the marine world (which is not even found in our coastal and islanders). The only answer is that he knew early on or instinctively (pre)felt the great metaphor of the sea; that the sea is a paradigm of freedom, that it stretches out before us like a giant, being the archetypal image of the Primordial, as much in the soul of a continental as in the soul of a bodul. In Kuliš, the sea is the most unquestionable parable of infinity, strength and enormous latent energy". But, still only as one of the possible genre stagings of the world.
