The author interprets Meštrović's recognizable work from a broader cultural perspective, primarily from a philosophical and sociological point of view, instead of the historically dominant one. Referring to the reviews of numerous critics of Meštrović's work, but also to his own literary achievements, he questions the starting points and reasons for his artistic expression, connecting the stylistic aspect with the specific spirit of the times at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Three chapters thematically problematize Meštrović's pessimism, expressionism and sacred themes in his sculpture.
