Deepak Chopra: The Third Jesus

The Christ We Cannot Ignore

"The man who was shaped by the religions of the East with this book presents to the West the Jesus we have lost or never met. Chopra considers what he calls the "Christ Consciousness, which we cannot identify with either the historical Jesus or the Jesus as presented by the beliefs, teachings and dogmas of the Church institutions.

"Third We can perceive Jesus" only when we enter a new human consciousness that will take us beyond tribes, prejudices and our religious systems. As a Christian, I welcome his insights into my Jesus and his challenging call to enter the consciousness of Christ, in order to become a deeper and more complete human being in it." (John Shelby Spong, retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark)

Who is Jesus Christ? The author of many successful books, Deepak Chopra, in the book "Third Jesus" provides an answer to that question, which is also a challenge to today's religious systems, and a new view of what Jesus can teach us all, regardless of our religious affiliation.

Chopra writes that Jesus is not one, but three. The first is the historical Jesus, a man who lived more than two thousand years ago and whose teachings are the foundation of Christian theology and thought. The second is Jesus the Son of God, who became the embodiment of an institutional religion with a specific dogma, priesthood and consecrated believers.

And finally, the third Jesus is the cosmic Christ, a spiritual guide whose teachings encompass all of humanity, not just the Church created in his name. He addresses the individual who wants to find God as a personal experience, who wants to achieve what some might call grace, God consciousness, or enlightenment.

Chopra ultimately argues that Christianity should overcome its tendency toward exclusivity and focus on the goal of being a faith of personal insight and spiritual development. In this way, Jesus can be understood as a universal teacher, which indeed he is - someone whose teachings of compassion, tolerance and understanding can encompass all and can be accepted by all.

Along with the interpretations and analysis of the teachings of Jesus, which Chopra breathes new life into, Chopra also offers the reader a spiritual path of exercises - based on the teachings of the New Testament - an extremely renewed practice of the search for a higher reality, which helps establish the connection between man and God.

"Your and my goal is not our goal is to become a part of him - or, as he said, to remain in him. We can do this at the level of consciousness by becoming a part of the infinite process of turning separation into unity. Our lives undoubtedly belong to that process."
