Some Malidoma Patrice

Summary

Malidoma Patrice Some: African Initiation

Among the Dagars of Burkina Faso, there is no distinction between the natural and the supernatural: the living communicate with the spirits of ancestors, and those with the appropriate knowledge easily travel to other worlds. Malidoma Patrice Some was born in a village in Dagar, only to be abducted as a small boy and taken to a Jesuit missionary school where he was roughly taught the European way of thinking and worshiping for fifteen years. When he returned to his people, he had to undergo an initiation so merciless that it could have cost him his life. Instead, Malidoma's success in crossing between two worlds led him to the task of transmitting the knowledge of his people to the West, and to this book about unknown healing and wisdom.
African Initiation is an excellent story of a living African tradition told with compassion for all those affected by the contemporary crisis of the spirit.
