Mahendranath Gupta: The Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna I
"M's First Visit to the Master
It was spring, a Sunday, a few days after Sri Ramakrishna's birthday. M. met him for the first time that evening. Sri Ramakrishna lived in Kailibari, the temple garden of Mother Kali, on the banks of the Ganges in Dakshineshwar.
M., who enjoyed leisure on Sundays, went with his friend Sidu to visit some gardens in Baranagore. As they were walking in Prasana Banerjee's garden, Sidu asked him, "There is a lovely place on the banks of the Ganges where a paramahamsa lives. Would you like us to go there?" M. agreed and they immediately set off for the garden of the Dakshineshwar temple. At dusk they reached the main gate and went straight to Sri Ramakrishna's room. And there they found him sitting on a wooden couch, facing the east. He spoke about God with a smile on his face. The room was full of people, who were sitting on the floor, absorbing his words in deep silence.
M. stood speechless and watched. It was as if he was standing where all the holy places met and as if Sukadeva himself was speaking the word of God, or as if Sri Caitanya was chanting the name and glory of the Lord in Puri with Ramananda, Svarupa and other devotees."
