Summary

This rare, first edition, with the Croatian title Discourses on the changes of tides and ebbs in the western ocean, is the work of the Dalmatian scholar and brave sailor, Nikola Sagroević (Šipan, c. 1527 - Manfredonia, Italy, c. 1573). Sagroević tried to improve the safety of navigation and to investigate the causes of the occurrence of sea changes. His focus was on the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes, which were well known to Venetian and Dubrovnik sailors. Sagroević was one of the first scientists to discover the connection between distance, the angle of the Moon, and changes in tides in terms of their duration and intensity. Exhaustive observations bore fruit and his ideas spread quickly. Thus, researchers included them in their works, for example Frane Petrić (Nova de universis philosophia,1591), Giovanni Battista Riccioli (Almagestum Novum,1651) and F. Bacon.

The publication of this work (1574) was overseen by the author's brother, G. Maria Sagri, given that Nikola had died the previous year. The work Expositions on Tides and Tides at the Lighthouse of Messina (Discorsi de i flussi et riflussi del Faro di Messina, 1580) was also published posthumously.

The book contains three interesting woodcut illustrations that show the periods of tides and tides and their connection with the Sun, Moon and Earth.
