Summary
Jeff VanderMeer: Born
In a ruined, nameless city of the future, a young woman named Rachel, who lives by collecting anything that might be useful, finds a tangled creature in the fur of a giant flying bear, the despot of their world, and names it Born. At first Born looks like nothing - just a greenish lump of something that could just be the Company's biotech waste, but it reminds Rachel of the island she was born on, now long gone under the sea. She feels a connection with him that she denies, because connections are traps, and in her world any weakness can mean death. Nevertheless, he brings Born to Balkonski Greben, an underground shelter where he lives with Vik, a dealer who sells memories, the only escape from a barren, defeated and broken city. Rachel manages to convince Vik not to use Born as raw genetic material in her lab. What is Born? Who is Born? Animal, person, biotech freak? The mind always finds ways to protect itself, to build fortresses, and some of those walls become traps.
