The collection "The Man in the Case and Other Novels and Travelogues" brings together some of the most significant works of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the ultimate Russian realist and the father of the modern short story.
The central work of this collection, the novella The Man in a case (1898), is part of his famous "small trilogy" (which also includes Gooseberry and On Love) and represents a sharp critique of social conformity and fear of life.
- The "case" metaphor: The main character of the novella The Man in a Case, the Greek language professor Belikov, puts everything around him in frames and covers (he hides an umbrella, a watch, and even his own face with a collar). That case symbolizes his panicked fear of change, freedom and any violation of the rules ("just in case something happens"). Through it, Chekhov shows how an individual, in fear of the environment, deprives himself of his freedom and lives in spiritual isolation.
- Petite bourgeoisie and social criticism: Through the short stories in this collection, Chekhov masterfully portrays the Russian province at the end of the 19th century. The characters are often trapped in monotony, bureaucracy, social norms and their own passivity.
- Travel notes: In addition to novellas, the collection often contains his travelogues (such as notes from trips to the island of Sakhalin or through Siberia). In them, Chekhov documents the difficult living conditions, human suffering and social injustice realistically, reportally and without embellishment, combining scientific precision (he was a doctor) with deep humanity.
