Summary
Vedrana Rudan: Blacks in Florence
When I wrote this book in 2006, I was in a panic. Will time swallow the subject? Hatred between Serbs and Croats in our and Serbian media was still a "hot commodity" even though eleven years had passed since the war. The misery was enormous, people fled Croatia looking for a place under the sun outside the hole where they rotted. Black people in Florence sold umbrellas to tourists even when it was a sunny day. The poor never lose hope for a better tomorrow.
2006. year, I frantically pounded away at the keyboard, certain that time was not working for me. Our politicians promised us a bright future so passionately that I fell asleep. However, no one told us that the war was over, on the contrary, they told us that the wounds were "fresh" and that we should never forget what the enemy did to us. Never, never, not even then. They didn't care about the blacks in Florence.
Nothing changed. The writer in me is happy. Time has not overtaken him. I, a human being, would like, I hoped, I was sure that everything would be different in 2024.
Blacks in Florence, you understand, is not a book about blacks in Florence. This is a book about black people everywhere. This is a book about black people who will never stop being black.
