Summary
Marija Jurić Zagorka: Crveni ocean I - II
Crveni ocean, an adventure novel with elements of science fiction, the only one of its kind in the rich oeuvre of Marija Jurić Zagorka, was published in sequels in Jutarnji list in 1918 and 1919. Now, published by EPH, almost a hundred years after the newspaper premiere, it is being published as a book for the first time, and that, considering the format of almost 700 pages, in two parts. The plot of the novel stretches from Zagreb, through France and Belgium all the way to America, and the key place is the island of Terror, where a group of world scientists come up with deadly inventions. Of course, as in every adventure of our most widely read writer, there is a passionate love story in the background, and its protagonists are Bojan and Zoran... "Up to a dozen men, mostly young people, were sitting at the long tables. Some of them were drawing various weapons with the greatest care, others were making cardboard models of various war machines, airplanes, submarines and other warships. Everyone was engrossed in work. Thomas led Bojan, lifting one more curtain and invited him to go to the third cave. The whole cave is just a magnificent laboratory with all the necessities of scientific research, and in the center of this research museum are moving the wise and apathetic faces of scholars, as if these people are only machines, without heart, without passion, like mechanisms that turn as someone turns them. Marija Jurić Zagorka was born in 1873 in the village of Negovec near Vrbovac, and died in 1957 in Zagreb. She was a prominent Croatian journalist and writer, mostly historical, but also social and adventure novels, with which she gained great affection from a wide readership. As a journalist, she debunked Khuen Hedervary's regime, and also fought for women's equality. Among her many novels, the Greek witch, Kći Lotrščak, Gordana, Republicans and others stand out. She took the nickname Zagorka from her love for Croatian Zagorje, where she spent her childhood.
