Summary
Emile Zola: Germinal
Translated by Tin Ujević
The novel that represents the peak of the literary creation of one of the most significant representatives of naturalism in literature is the second "novel about a worker" from the Rougon-Macquartovi cycle. While in the first ("The Lair", 1877) he talks about the torments of Gervaise Macquart, who belongs to the world of small Parisian artisans sunk into alcoholism and misery, in the second the protagonist is one of her sons Etienne, whom he places in the context of the inhumane living conditions of the mining community and the inevitable revolt of the workers based on real events from the north of France during the industrial crisis of 1866.
