Zola Emile

Summary

Emile Zola: Nana

A masterpiece in which sexuality, history and myth live and die together.

One of Zola's most popular novels, Nana, was published in 1880 as the ninth part of the Rougon-Macquart family saga. This monumental fresco of French society shows the material, moral and social decline that finds echoes in our time as well.
The most famous courtesan in the history of literature, Nana, is the daughter of a washerwoman and a laborer who died due to an accident at work. We meet her as an eighteen-year-old actress in a Parisian variety show, without much talent, but magnetic attraction. Seemingly independent and self-aware in her role as a high-society coquette, Nana rises to fame, charming men from aristocrats to pro-lifers and actors, and treats her lovers unscrupulously. While they shower her with gifts and fulfill all her wishes, she becomes a real "classy lady, a rentier of men's stupidity and filth, a marquis of high pavements", without ceasing, however, to long for ordinary happiness and to have true feelings for those closest to her.

Zola's desire to expose and deconstruct the lowest impulses of the upper classes of the Second Empire makes Nana one of the first modern novels in which contemporary themes, realistic observations about society, dialogues and scenarios appear. The publication of Nana caused a great controversy, because of which the novel became a bestseller almost overnight, and today it is considered a classic of French literature.

"Nana passes into myth, yet remains real. She is a creation of Babylon."
- Gustave Flaubert

"It is necessary to read Zola not to look for descriptions of the past in his work, but to better read our future."
