Summary
Vjekoslav Boban: Jakša Kušan: One Life
Traditionalism is the fundamental poetic feature of the entire literary work of Jakša Kušan. It is mirrored on a formal, structural and thematic level. We cannot avoid traditionalism even when the prose writer, regularly using the classical realist method, depicts the patriarchy of a self-contained psychological and ethical community whose fanatical devotion to tradition leads to complete inertness and fatal backwardness. In this spirit, the writer, engrossed in the impressiveness of the observed details, completely surrenders to anecdotes and narration, forgetting to develop the plot or delve into the psychological depths. The latter seems to be assumed, as if it is immanent to the remote Bosnian villages that set off fireworks with extraordinarily interesting details on the fatal edge of thin life and fat death...(from the afterword by editor Vjekoslav Boban).
