Summary

Sven Hassel: Penal Battalion

TORGAU. Called prison, but actually hell. A callous and hopeless hell run by sadistic lunatics with clubs in riding boots, a hell of wretched tenants treated worse than cattle. There were only two exits from Torgau: one led to the firing squad, and the other to the convict battalion and to the Russian front. Twenty percent of the prisoners got out of Torgau in the first way. Maybe they were the lucky ones, after all. The tank battalions of the penal regiments - people whose lives were considered cheap by the German high command - were thrown into the hilarious hell of the Russian front.

Since they were treated like animals, they learned to live like animals: to steal and cheat, to behave shamelessly, to beat not only the enemy but also each other, to die animalistically and cruelly...

Such people were sacrificed by the Führer in his Russian offensives... Men of the Punishment Battalion.

The novel tells the Odyssey of a detachment of tankmen from the armored units of the German army who in Russian uniforms and in Russian tanks made their way far behind the Russian lines.

The author describes better than anyone the suffering, cruelty and despair so characteristic of the German army in the last months of the war on the Eastern Front.
