Dane Sven Hassel, convicted as a deserter from Hitler's German army, was sent to a penal regiment on the Russian front. In the frozen steppe, soldiers from the regiment fight for survival against the numerically and morally superior Red Army. The nightmare of war is described through the prism of individuals, ordinary soldiers who experience all the brutality of war on their own skin, fighting not only against the enemy, but also against unimaginable weather conditions, hunger, superior officers, and often against themselves, which confirms the fact that the most difficult thing in war is to remain human. This work, written in a prison camp after the war, is the first title in a series of novels based on the lived war experience of the author, who was on the fronts throughout Russia, Italy and France.
