Summary

Sergej Dovlatov: The Coffin

The Coffin is one of the most famous, wittiest and most elegant prose works of the famous Russian dissident writer Sergej Dovlatov, originally published in 1986, while it appeared in Croatian in 2013 in the edition of Cicero, translated by Sanje Veršić). The plot of this loosely connected autobiographical novel begins when the author, years after emigrating from the Soviet Union to the United States of America, finds his only, old suitcase at the bottom of the closet - the same one with which the Soviet authorities allowed him to leave his homeland. Opening it together with his son, the writer does not find any precious treasure in it, but a collection of seemingly worthless, everyday and completely random objects: Finnish nylons, a pair of woolen socks, cracked patent shoes, a repaired suit and an old officer's belt. Each of those eight subjects becomes a separate chapter and a nostalgic emotional trigger for brilliant, bittersweet stories about the author's stormy and absurd youth in Soviet Russia in the 1960s and 1970s. Through these retrospections, Dovlatov describes his days spent in the amateur theater where he played Emperor Peter the Great, his black-humored ventures of smuggling scarce Western goods, and his complex, failed and unusual relationships with his friends and wife. His distinctive style is devoid of cheap pathos, bitterness and dry political moralizing; instead, the author uses superb irony, precise minimalism, warm humor and light-hearted sadness to expose the reverse side of rigid Soviet reality. This book is remembered as a fascinating and deep study of emigration, human destinies and memories, which, through small, discarded material trifles, manages to faithfully and warmly reconstruct the spirit of a bygone time and the absurdity of an entire social order.
