Summary

Marieke Lucas Rijneveld: The Discomfort of the Evening

The youngest winner of the Booker International Prize, on the top lists of the best novels of many world media for 2020, The Discomfort of the Evening is the stunning debut novel of the young Dutch literary sensation Marieke Lucas Rijneveld.

The Mulder family falls apart after the death of the eldest child, son Matthies, who drowned when he fell through the ice while skating. His ten-year-old sister Jas, from whose perspective we follow the story, mourns her brother's death, and at the same time she feels guilty because she wished him dead when he didn't take her skating with him. After the tragedy, Jas refuses to take off her red jacket, which is getting smellier and heavier, pockets full of toads, rabbit whiskers and other things that serve her in performing the protective rituals she resorts to with her brother Obbe and sister Hanna after Matthies' death. Obbe tortures animals in sacrificial rituals, and Hanna fantasizes about escaping from the farm - where there is a rich vocabulary dedicated to animals, but there is an oppressive silence when it comes to human life, where the image of a menacing and cruel God reigns. The parents avoid each other's touch, even their eyes, and while they mourn for their lost son, their children are left to themselves inventing their own rules, their own cosmology. In wild confusion, they cross the usual boundaries of normal behavior.

The novel tells about how trauma (in this case, the death of a child in the family) shapes a person's experience and view of the world. Brutal, dark, gloomy, powerful prose about a girl in a strongly religious family on an isolated Dutch farm who faces the experience of her older brother's death.
