Vranski prior Ivan Paližna

Borić Lucian

Summary

Lucian Borić: Vransk prior Ivan Paližna

This monograph is an attempt to reconstruct the biography of Ivan Paližna (? – 1391), Vransk prior or the head of the knightly order of the Ivanovs in the area of the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom. From unknown beginnings, Paližna built his rise with a sword in his hand and in the service of King Ludovic of Anjou, and he was also helped in his rise by the chaotic situation within the order of the Ivanovs, which he knew how to skillfully use. After Ludovic's death, he was active in the dynastic turmoil on the Croatian-Hungarian throne, rebelling for unknown reasons against the legitimate authority of Queens Elizabeth Kotromanić and Maria Anzuvinska, and he later continued his fight against Maria's fiance, King Sigismund of Luxembourg. At the height of his career, in an equally chaotic state within the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom, he also earned the title of ban, and in Dalmatia in the first half of 1387 he behaved like a real lord.

But because of all this, Paližna also represented a distorted image of the knightly ideal, one that does not know obedience, purity and poverty. With his actions, Paližna left not only the zeitgeist of the Middle Ages - older Croatian historians, in addition to being impressed by his military skills, were also "stunned" by his cooperation with the Bosnian king Stjepan Tvrtko, a ruler who also knew how to skilfully use the dynastic turmoil in the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom and expand his possessions. Since Paližna cooperated with Tvrtka against the "foreigner" Sigismund, with their romantic view of Paližna's activities, these Croatian historians, in addition to the Croatian ones, built the future "Yugoslav" national identity in the spirit of the idea of South Slavic "brotherhood and unity", uncritically seeing Paližna as a fighter for the liberation of South Slavs from foreign rule, but also unarguedly, bypassing the methodologies of historical science, often overemphasizing his cooperation with The company.
