Then Burroughs became one of the most influential writers of his time, mostly with his views, and from a beat icon he even became a pop icon. Jack Kerouac called him "the greatest satirist after Jonathan Swift", always subversive towards the system of modern American society, and Ballard considers him the most important American writer of the second half of the 20th century.
