Borislav Pekić: Collected letters from abroad
Pekić's *Letters from abroad*, collected in a single edition, change the literary tradition. We know letters as the name for a special and very important literary genre that writers called precisely by that name. Thus, Ljuba Nenadović wrote *Letters from Italy*, in which he speaks in an unforgettable way about Njegoš, and letters from Cetinje about Montenegrins, and he also wrote from Paris, Switzerland and Germany. Jelena Dimitrijević writes letters from Niš about harems, and from Thessaloniki, India and Egypt, Isidora Sekulić is unsurpassed in *Letters from Norway*, and Jovan Dučić himself highlighted his letters that stretch from the Swiss Alps to Jerusalem and Cairo. Crnjanski writes *Letters from Paris*. There is, therefore, an epistolary genre. It was particularly important in the eighteenth century, when novels in letters were written by Goethe, Richardson, Laclos..., and philosophical narratives in the form of letters were developed by Montesquieu and Rousseau. These two directions are joined by Pekić's novel *How to appease a vampire*, in which storytelling and philosophy meet in an epistolary form. However, Pekić writes his *Letters from abroad* differently - as a study of character and mentality, history and consciousness and the relationship between "us" and "them". It powerfully evokes the view that falls on us from the West and humorously, with a lot of humor and irony, shows how we see ourselves and our position in Europe. This is precisely where the great appeal of these texts lies: they are a kind of lesson on how to look at yourself and Europe, and how Europe does not see itself, but sees us. Since he lived in London for a long time in a kind of exile and wrote texts intended for broadcast in a special program of the famous BBC, Pekić, with his literary power and insight, depth of knowledge and enchanting skill with words, simultaneously provides a deep artistic experience and a lesson, just like in the old ancient aesthetic ideal.
