Summary
Ken Follett: Pillars of the Earth I-II
Pillars of the Earth is an epic saga about a monk from the Middle Ages. His task is to build the largest Gothic cathedral the world has ever seen. This is also a novel full of intrigue, fast action and passionate romance.
Ken Follett introduces us to the world of feudal England during the 12th century, vast forests, walled cities, castles and monasteries. This richly imagined story is filled with the rhythms of everyday life in the Middle Ages, the destruction of war and beautiful landscapes. The mastery of storytelling draws us irresistibly into the interwoven lives of the main characters: Tom (master mason), Aliena (a ravishingly beautiful noblewoman), Jack (master stonemason), Philip (prior of Kingsbridge), Elena (a woman from the forest who casts a terrifying curse).
We can say that the cathedral building, with its almost eerie skill of uneducated masons, is the center of all events in the novel. The construction of the object serves the author to weave a skillful story of betrayal, revenge and love that begins with the hanging of an innocent man and ends with the humiliation of the king.
