Summary
Ivan Gundulić: Tears of the Prodigal Son
Very rare edition!
The poem Tears of the Prodigal Son was created according to the parable from Luke's Gospel (Lk 15, 11-32) about a father who forgives his son's disobedience and insanely spent possessions, after humbly repenting, aware of the gravity of his actions. Gundulić takes over and elaborates the theme, leaving the basic lines of the template recognizable.
Gundulić's work Tears of the Prodigal Son religious is a poem structured in three laments, each beginning with an appropriate quote from Luke's Gospel from which the topic is taken. The laments are titled after the three stages that the prodigal son goes through: sin, realization and repentance.
At the beginning there is also a short dedication in prose Prisvitelmo mr. Jeru Dživo Gundulić, formally separated from the laments, in which the author looks back on the tradition of href="https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubrovnik">Dubrovnik poetry and briefly announces the topic.
The work is written in symmetrical eights combined in sestine, where the first cry has 74, the second 56 and the third 92 sestinas of eight, rhymes ababcc.
