Summary

Pablo Neruda: The Universal Song

This monumental depiction of a continent from pre-Columbian days to the arrival of the conquistadors, then the struggle for independence and various historical data about the time in which the book was written, is at the same time a biography of Neruda himself, but also a poem about his anonymous compatriots, brotherhood, oppressed and humiliated (workers, peasants, etc.) and quiet and sublime expanses surrounded by a mysterious ocean. Anthem of the Latin American continent and its nature, geography, history, attempts to redeem one's being from the dehumanizing mass world to identification with the past and the author's time, full of misfortune and suffering, but also joy. A work that colors Orian facts with deep emotions and surrounds them with beautiful nature. The general song (Canto general) simultaneously represents universal literature and a unique chronicle of Latin America. According to many critics, one of Pablo Neruda's most significant and extensive works.
