Mania's father is the chief of the Wolf Clan, from which she was ostracized. Her mother was the Tiger Queen, and these tribes have been mortal enemies for generations. Manie is hiding a deadly secret. All clan members can transform into their clan's animal form, but Manije possesses the power to transform into both a wolf and a tiger. Since he refuses to give up half of his soul, he decides to escape, freeing a Wolf Clan prisoner in the process. After her is the killer Broken Axe, determined to bring her back to be punished. Mania's father plans to rule the north, and control over his daughter is central to his ambitions. But other tribes are also preparing for conflict. Strangers appear from the far south, seeking allies in their war. The season of omens is upon us, as the priests announce the danger and darkness that is spreading across the land.
