Summary
Hrvoje Ivančić: Za'atar - Stories from the Middle East
Adventure Library
Hrvoje Ivančić first found himself in the Middle East about twelve years ago, driven by youthful curiosity and an Aristotelian desire for knowledge. This young travel writer consciously stepped into the unknown, accepting life as an open book and observing the challenge of crossing the street in his native Zabok as much as driving an unarmored transporter from Damascus to Homs. Ivančić's stories build tension from two perspectives: one represents the almost insane audacity of individual protagonists — Western journalists and other travelers intending to the increasingly restless Levant — to step out of the safe lee of established routines into seductive danger; the second is colored by the stoic equanimity of those others - the inhabitants of that very Levant as the core of the fear of today's West - with inevitable destruction and suffering, but with the simultaneous staunch resistance to ontological evil and the vortex of madness that has sucked them in beyond their will and knowledge for a long time.
In this collection, Ivančić strives for a kind of dharma of a world wanderer - but not in the peaceful forests of northern California like Kerouac's beatniks, but in the heated Syrian and the Jordanian desert in whose daily mirage it is impossible to distinguish the Other from oneself.
Ivančić's short stories, sometimes in the form of cartoons or travel notes, vary in structure from the grotesque to the thriller, but at the same time, in a steady rhythm, they warn the reader of the fragility of all interpretations of historical events in the Middle East and the weight of a once lived, personal experience of hatred and war destruction.
Hrvoje Ivančić was born in 1983. in Zabok. He finished high school in his hometown, and studied history in Zagreb. He travels in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and publishes reports in the magazines Globus, Novosti, Prizma, H-alter, and occasionally collaborates with TV companies.
