Summary
Zagreb written space by Željka Čorak
The texts in this book were written from 1977 to 1988. It is a selection of essays, notes, speeches, studies, and articles in which the history and life of the city of Zagreb are traced through the written word. The city is never the same, it changes every day. The passer-by is the one who fulfills its changeability with his transience... The history of the city is very fast and before the tunnel of words, pictures barely arrive. But those words themselves become material. Space is built from what it was written from. The book has three parts that talk about the natural and historical characteristics of Zagreb: Small and large occasions (Trg Republike, Roosevelt Square, Cathedral, Dolac, Zrinjevac, Crematorium, etc.), Sides of the World (Northern Zagreb, Trnje), One Hundred Years of Solitude (Hermann Boll, etc.). All texts are dedicated to architecture, urban planning problems of Zagreb and the place and responsibility of man in it. Personal view and love are visible at every step. Željka Čorak is not just an ordinary city walker, but an excellent scientist whose expert texts are read with pleasure. Photos from the past and present of the city perfectly complement the text.
