Milan Brdar: The Mind of the Black Forest, the Rise and Fall of Martin Heidegger

 

This book was written for Heidegger connoisseurs to see how little they knew him. This is not about arrogance, but about the difference in interpretation: the prevailing one in the literature and the one presented here. It is also implicitly an assessment of a large part of the literature on the said author, from which we failed to understand "what, in fact, the interpreter wanted to say", and more often, "does he know what he is talking about".

The literature on Heidegger is huge, but the cloud of obscurity in which most of these texts disappear is also huge. It is unlikely that there is a philosopher who is more praised and celebrated and less understood. However, it is not easy to write about Heidegger. The greatest philosopher of the 20th century, the greatest Western philosopher after Hegel, finally, the greatest Western philosopher after Heraclitus. All this has already been written in the literature, mostly without a solid, and that means a clear and substantiated explanation. All these ratings are given with an understanding of what has yet to be shown. Interpreters-sympathizers of Heidegger even tolerate many things that they would significantly reproach anyone else, as if they are afraid or have gone too far into worship. There are critical interpreters who testify that they heard from the "Heideggerians": "Why don't you leave him alone when you are so critical?" It bothers them that he is criticized at all. We have not heard such a thing about any other philosopher. Considering that this is the way things are, we should not be surprised that the one who decides to interpret Heidegger autonomously also asks the question of how he will be viewed by numerous apologists. Given that we have not found a single interpreter who shared the above-mentioned assessments, and who explained them in his text or monograph without an obscure spin, we have to take their word for it, which does not suit serious philosophy at all.
