"In this book I will not attempt to offer an introduction to the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, much less a new interpretation of a work whose comprehensiveness and richness will defy commentators for a long time. But I would like to provide, at least to the same extent as the story of an individual, a biography of an opinion. Therefore, I will stick primarily to Derrida's readings and the influences he suffered, the creation of his main works, the upheaval surrounding their reception, which Derrida fought led, the institution he founded. However, this formulation annoys me in several ways because it excludes what is supposed to be: childhood, family, material life. For Derrida himself, as he explained in conversations with Mauricio Ferraris, "the term 'intellectual biography'" was, a century after the emergence of psychoanalysis, even more so than the term "conscious intellectual life". The boundary between public and private life seemed to him to be just as fragile and undefined."
