Summary
Oivind Bratberg, Andreas H. Hvidsten: What are political sciences?
"Politics is an eternal debate about how to organize society. This debate has always been conducted on two levels: theoretical and practical, and political considerations are as old as the first sedentary societies. The science of politics, as a systematic consideration of the organization of society and its management, is thus counted among the first achievements of civilization. For example, a developed tradition of political thought already existed in China and around the Mediterranean 500 BC. What is the difference between a good state and a bad state? These are just some of the eternal questions that make up the core of political science today than when someone first asked them. Eivind Bratberg and Andreas H. Widsten In our part of the world, the systematic rethinking of the state and politics begins in ancient Greece at the same time as three political innovations: democracy, citizenship and public debate. Historically speaking, the science of politics arises from the creation of opportunities for the analysis and critical expression of political issues. Understanding multiple and complex political realities requires rich analytical tools. One of the advantages of political science - at the same time one of the biggest challenges of this research field - is that it represents a meeting place of many different scientific and thought traditions: legal, philosophical, historical, sociological, economic... which also have their own approaches and methods. The book What is political science? provides a historical overview of the development of political science from antiquity to modern times and presents its key debates from antiquity to the present day."
