Let us now return to Belgrade keeping in mind our main goal - the journey to Constantinople. Since we had secured in the city everything we thought was necessary for traveling by land, leaving Smederevo (Symandria), once a stronghold of Serbian despots, on the left, we headed towards Niš (Nissa). When we reached a hill, the Turks showed us the snow-covered peaks of Transylvania in the distance; they also showed us a place near which the remains of Trajan's bridge can still be seen.
After we crossed the river, which the locals call Morava (Moraua), we came to a Serbian village called Jagodina (easy); there we had the opportunity to see funeral customs in that country, which are very different from ours. The body of the deceased was exposed in the church, his face was uncovered and next to his head was bread, a piece of meat and a glass of wine; his wife was standing on the side and also his daughter, dressed in the best clothes, the daughter had a cap decorated with peacock feathers...
Not far from Jagodina we came to a small river that the residents call Nišava. She followed us on the right until we reached Niš. At one place, on the bank of the river (where the remains of the Roman road can still be seen), we found a small marble column with an inscription in Latin, but it was so damaged that it could not be read. For the residents of this area, Niš is a large and important city...
