Summary

Aron Gurevich: Medieval world: the culture of the silent majority

The history of mankind is not only the history of the endeavors of great and significant individuals who directly participated in decisive events and within the limits of their abilities directed the course of history. Opposite them, or, perhaps it is more correct to say, next to them, there was a group of people that includes the succinct and insightful syntagms "great mutes", "great absentees", "people without archives and without faces", "no majority", "uncountable multitude". It was on them that the research attention of Aron Gurevich, one of the greatest medievalists of the 20th century, was focused, who tried to study the relationship between folk ("folkloric") and official ("scientific") traditions in medieval culture. The problem is that the "great mutes" left almost no trace behind them and that the researcher is directed exclusively to the written legacy of representatives of the upper classes, whose objectivity, of course, remains uncertain. After a careful reading of the preserved sources, moving along winding detours, Gurevič shows extraordinary research insight in which the iron logic of a critical historian merged with thoughtful imagination to expose the historical truth. The outcome of such scientific work is a convincing and vivid picture of ordinary medieval people and their understanding of such categories as freedom, time, myth, history, sin, redemption, family, inner and outer world.
