We admire Stepinac, but we do not admire him because he is a Croat, because he is our compatriot, because he stood up to defend the greatest Croatian religious and national sanctuaries, but because we feel, in his modesty, his exceptional greatness among the pygmies of the modern world. The great Pope Pius XII, a deep thinker and a holy man, called our Stepinac one of the greatest people, perhaps among the greatest of our time. Stepinac is great, because he is great as a man, so, accordingly, he is also a great believer, that is why he is also a great bishop, he is also a great patriot, because all of this together forms the harmony of his extraordinary personality. Stepinac is a man not only of our twentieth century, but a man who outlives the ages: Humanity is renewed from such phenomena, just as such believers contribute a lot to the sanctity of the Church itself, which, if such timeless men did not appear from time to time, would have completely sunk into the mundane, not differing in any way from other worldly governments and states. Because the Church is either holy, or it is not the Church: the closer it is to Christ's Doctrine, the more similar it is to his Beatitude. The Church entrusted us Croats with a duty, because it helped Stepinac's greatness come to the fore in world dimensions [he would be morally great only within the borders of his small Croatia, because his greatness is internal], well, even Stepinac did not owe the Church anything. The complete leveling between Stepinac will be in an hour; today's young generations will experience it; when Stepinac will be elevated to the honor of the altar, among the great saints, confessionals, martyrs of the Church (from the book, Vinko Nikolić)
