Summary

Valentin Groebner: Confirmation of personality

Passport, identity document and control in medieval Europe

The history of identification in Europe tells about spies and false princes, about skin colors and the victorious campaign of the document and its forgeries: the Middle Ages are hidden in the papers that confirm who we are today. The history of identification papers, descriptions of persons and documents literally takes us back to the time between the 13th and 17th centuries. From letters of association and stamps, signs of recognition and portraits, among traveling journeymen, fraudsters and Roma, registration systems have developed that officially, in black and white, confirm the name and identity of a person.
No matter how convinced we are that we are the person we are, we can only prove it with the help of valid papers issued to us by others. The stories about the "warrant" and "passport" are therefore being retold even at the beginning of the 21st century: in discussions about DNA and biometrics, on the black market for stolen identities, passports and visas, and in the case of the fate of undocumented refugees. Who is who? And how can this be proven?

In Identity Confirmation, Valentin Groebner not only describes how people were identified before the advent of photography, fingerprints and DNA analysis, but also presents a kind of history of state control over its citizens.
