Summary

Godfrey Goodwin: The Private World of Ottoman Women

Godfrey Goodwin, one of the significant authorities in the field of Ottomanology, sheds light on the least researched area of the long Ottoman rule - the life of women. The patriarchal, Muslim world of the Ottoman Empire is already a complex context for dealing with gender roles, and the author makes the task even more difficult by covering a time span of six centuries. Nevertheless, moving from settlements in Anatolia, all the way to city and court life in the 19th century, he skilfully covers the most diverse aspects of life: from the distribution of work among family members, through secret meetings of lovers to famous harems.
Using a variety of material such as letters, paintings, travelogues, scientific and historical studies, Goodwin reconstructs the roles of members of all classes and the most diverse destinies - both those who had maids and those who did. captured. In this spirit, the style itself varies from anecdotal, enriched with intriguing testimonies, to purely factual. But, as is often the case with history, dry data - for example, how many women are needed to milk a certain type of goat - give a richer and more complex picture than it seems: only a layman would look for the root of polygamy in sexual appetite instead of the harsh conditions of life in the countryside.
Goodwin is the author of the major book History of Ottoman Architecture and works on the "Michelangel of the East" - the greatest Islamic builder Mimar Sinan, a born Christian: Sinan: Ottoman Architecture and Its Values Today.
He also published the books Islamic Spain, The Janissaries, Topkapi Palace and others.
