Summary

Vladimir Loknar: Dictionary of Latin and Croatian Medical Terminology

Loknar's Dictionary of Latin and Croatian Medical Terminology is a large dictionary in terms of its scope, it includes around 20,000 entries, and it is extensive in its treatment. It would already be a gain if the author gave only Croatian equivalents of Latin names, but he also gives short and clear meanings of most terms. This is a distinct advantage of that dictionary because with meanings it acquires a new value. Thus, the bilingual dictionary forms a real terminological dictionary. In addition, he gives it many lexical explanations. This also changes the character of the dictionary, but again not in such a way that it dissolves in the data, but to remain within the dictionary framework and to add what is closely related to the term in question. Observed from the linguistic side of the Croatian language, it can be said that he adopted a good linguistic direction, the one in which the aim is to find a Croatian name for each term in the first place or an already fully adopted foreign name that can be considered Croatian. He achieves this by taking an existing word or by adapting an existing word to medical terminology or by creating a new one in the spirit of Croatian creativity. But it is by no means purist because it offers a wide range of possibilities that everyone can make a choice according to their needs and preferences. At the same time, this dictionary provides the basis for the future standardization of Croatian medical terminology (...) Although we have several medical dictionaries that are mostly outdated and terminologically incomplete, which means that Loknar's is by no means redundant because it has found its rightful place among them with its terminological approach, its abundance, its comprehensiveness, and its offers in the selection of good Croatian possibilities. That is why his work can be recommended as a useful addition to our medical terminology and our lexicography. Excerpt from the review by academician Stjepan Babić
