Summary
Ranko Bugarski: The Grammar of Serbian Jargon
As a kind of language in miniature, jargon provides fresh insights into the functioning of the language as a whole. While standard language includes the characteristics of "in vitro" language, jargon is entirely an "in vivo" language - with us, it is more enumerated than described, more evaluated than interpreted. This book is the result of the author's many years of dealing with linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects of Serbian jargon, especially in the domain of suffixal derivation of nouns. Although it includes close to 4,000 slang terms, it is not a dictionary of slang but an original attempt to illuminate the grammatical mechanisms for deriving slang words. Complementary to the author's book "Serbian watersheds - a monograph with a dictionary" (Academic book, 2019), this study is offered primarily to linguists, sociologists and psychologists, but also to a wider, especially younger, readership.
