Summary

Dejan Aničić: Wife, lover, slave: women in ancient Greece, Rome and early Christianity

Until the mid-seventies of the last century, it seemed that women in antiquity, when it came to science and journalism, did not exist. Increasingly, by asking new historical questions and turning to hitherto neglected topics (private, everyday) and marginal social and political groups (peasants, workers, heretics, etc.), women and their historical position are increasingly becoming the subject of serious scientific research and wider interest of the educated public. The strengthening of the women's movement certainly contributed to this, but also the increasing number of girls who enrolled in universities. Therefore, it is not surprising that gender studies have flourished in recent decades, especially in America, refreshed scientific research in a wide range of humanities and significantly enriched our knowledge. and some of the thirteen translated articles were chosen precisely because they provide a description and overview of certain topics without going into too much detail. On the other hand, there are also articles in the collection that fascinate with careful and intelligent analysis, focus on seemingly unimportant details and through them come to surprising insights that are intellectually stimulating. Since contemporary research is marked by the strong influence of theory (philosophy, sociology, psychoanalysis), two frequently cited and reprinted theoretical articles dealing with the problem of gender and sexual categories have been added to the collection.
