Summary

Petra Mitić: Why feminism

Feminist theory and the problem of identity as part of critical paradigms of the contemporary era

Feminist theory is, without a doubt, one of the contemporary critical starting points that mostly leaves room for fruitful criticism of contemporary culture. The critical and transformative potential of feminist theory, which was among the first to establish a radically new way of looking at difference, alien to the patriarchal perspective based on hierarchical binarism, patriarchal culture tends to neutralize, and at the same time, through institutional integrations and assimilations, transforms it into support for its own neoliberal agenda. The aim of this study is therefore to review and explain the often very complex, conflicting or paradoxical relations of feminist theory, itself very heterogeneous, with other theories of culture, and then determine the real possibilities of critical intervention that feminism has today. First defining the concept of feminism, Petra Mitić looks back at the history of the feminist idea, emphasizing the difference in meaning between these two terms. Feminist thought, namely, far precedes feminism as a movement or as a theory, and goes back to the very beginnings of (known) patriarchal history and its first critics, who were neither women nor theorists, but Greek tragedians: artists like Aeschylus, inspired by the memory of a different and more fruitful philosophy of life and endowed with a visionary power of foresight, were the first to expose the principles of domination and the practice of oppression served by patriarchal law and justice.
