Lorens Darel - Biografija

Bowker Gordon

Summary

Gordon Bowker: Lorens Darel - Biography

"When Darel walked into the room, there would be a happy atmosphere, as if someone had opened the champagne", remembered one of Darel's friends. But there was also a dark, cruel side of Darel - the life of this creative writer and poet was as intricate as a labyrinth.
He was born in India in 1912, but soon, due to his parents' decision, he was exiled from his boyhood paradise at the foot of the Himalayas and went to England for further education. He left this gloomy "island of pudding", as he called it, in the mid-thirties and went to Greece, and then to Egypt, where he spent his most productive years. In wartime Egypt, the "Alexandrian Quartet" is created, the work that will make him famous, and for which travel agencies were flooded with requests to take the curious to the places he described and created. As an employee of the British Embassy, he then went to Yugoslavia, Argentina, Cyprus, and finally settled in Provence, where he died in 1990.
Lorens Darel married four times, lost two daughters (one due to divorce, and the other committed suicide), and his most harmonious marriage ended with the sudden death of his wife, Claude, in 1967. He was inspired by wine and the Mediterranean sun, and he drew creativity from sex and obsession with madness. Freud, the Marquis De Sade and especially Henri Miller will encourage him to rebel against the prevailing morality, and he often sought refuge in Western and Eastern mysticism.
Darel's literary career lasted almost five decades. He wrote novels, poems, plays, essays, literary criticism, and travelogues. He also left behind a large number of letters. His work is still praised and criticized, and above all - still read. Contemporary writers, such as Karl Uve Knausgaard, often emphasize Darel's influence on them.
